There are counterfeit yuccas in our midst and they are not Joshua trees. Not all plants that have spine-tipped leaves and whorled leaf arrangements are Joshua trees. Not only are they not Joshua trees, they are not even yuccas. There are four of these counterfeits: an agave, an ex-yucca and two nolinas. All four resemble yuccas and are found within the range of the Joshua tree. The Utah agave, Agave utahensis, can be mistaken for a young, yet-to-branch Joshua tree. Both species have spine-tipped leaves arranged in whorls, a similarity that has taxonomic foundation since yuccas and agaves are in the same plant family, Agavaceae. The Utah agave is easily distinguished from Yucca brevifolia (the technical name of the Joshua tree) by the Utah’s lack of a trunk and comparatively rigid and fleshy leaves with visible spines on leaf edges. The Utah agave is most common on rocky, limestone slopes, an environment usually shunned by Joshua trees. Another yucca-like plant is Whipple yucca, Hesperoyucca whipplei. At the northern base of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains in Southern California, Whipple yuccas and Joshua trees often grow side by side (sympatric). The two species can be distinguished by the Whipple yucca’s lack of a trunk and its much longer and pliable leaves that are grayish green in color. Whipple yuccas are comparatively short-lived and the basal rosette of leaves dies soon after blooming. The final counterfeit yuccas are nolinas of the family Ruscaceae or Butcher’s-Broom Family. There are two species found within the range of the Joshua tree. Because of their sometimes massive trunks which may branch once or twice, nolinas can be confused with Joshua trees. The two nolina species found within Joshua Tree National Park are Parry nolina ( Nolina parryi ) and Bigelow nolina ( Nolina bigelovii ). Nolinas can be easily distinguished from Joshua trees by their much longer and flexible leaves. In some areas, however, trunk diameters can equal that of the largest Joshua tree. Of particular note in this regard are the massively trunked Parry nolina specimens occurring in the Kingston Mountains just north and west of the Mojave National Preserve. Cornett is a desert ecologist and author of The Joshua Tree.
