Nothing fills a person with dread quite like a misbehaving refrigerator, whether the appliance is humming but not cooling or has started mysteriously leaking water. Buying a new fridge is expensive, but some repairs can cost more than the appliance is worth, and all the while it can be hard for a homeowner or DIYer to know just how serious the problem is. . Terry Spencer is a licensed service technician with... He explains for us the most common problems, how to diagnose your fridge, and whether it's worth keeping. If the evaporator fan motor in the freezer is running, then make sure the compressor is also working. "The condenser coils needs to be checked, and cleaned if excessively dirty, and the condenser fan motor will also need to be running," Spencer says. Look at the condenser coils to see if they're covered in dirt, pet hair or debris, which can keep them from doing their job. Home centers sell coil brushes for $6 that clean the coils. First unplug the refrigerator. Then access the evaporator coil and look at the frost pattern. "You should have a very light frost pattern on the entire coil," Spencer explains. "If only the upper half or third of the coil has frost, then there is a sealed system problem, meaning there is a restriction or not enough Freon, probably because of a leak, in the system. What to check: This is usually caused by one of three things: First would be a bad door seal that's torn or stretched out. Second, a warped door that's not straight and therefore won't close properly, leaving a gap between the top or bottom of the door and the refrigerator. (Most doors have cams that help keep the door closed, and if it's damaged, the door may not stay shut. ) Repair: "In some cases the seal can be heated with a hair dryer and formed to help seal the leak," Spencer says. " If the door is warped but has screws for the seal, you can loosen the screws, twist the door a little, and retighten the screws to keep the door where you want it. "Be careful not to twist the door too much or the inner door liner may crack,"... If the problem is damaged door cams, you can replace them. What to check: If your fridge has the freezer up above the refrigerator unit and you're seeing water under the crisper drawers, or if you've got ice buildup in the bottom of the freezer in a side-by-side unit, those are signs that the evaporator... "Occasionally food can plug the drain, but most likely the drain is frozen. Water from the evaporator coils will keep accumulating during the defrost cycles until the drain is cleared. Repair: You'll need to thaw the ice that's blocking the drainage line. "Once the line is cleared, check to see if a drain trough heater is used, and replace it if it's defective," Spencer says. "If you have a metal defrost heater, a drain strap can be hooked onto the heating element to help direct heat into the drain. This will help keep the drain from freezing. " Make sure the freezer temperature is not too cold, Spencer advises. Repair: Let's say your refrigerator uses $20 of energy per month, which is $240 a year, Spencer says. A new Energy Star refrigerator will cost $10 a month, or $120 a year, to run. A new Energy Star model costing $500 will pay for itself in just over four years in energy savings. Likewise, an Energy Star fridge priced at $1,000 will take just over eight years to pay off in energy savings. What to check: Excessive heat can lead to big problems, Spencer says. "Heat is the main contributing cause of compressor failure," he says. "It is imperative to keep the condenser coils clean and to check and replace the condenser fan motor if it's turning slowly or not at all. The Freon moving through the condenser coils also needs to be cooled in order for the refrigerator to work properly. What to check: Spencer says that this problem can be tricky to diagnose. Some of the electrical components, like the compressor, can be checked for a short with a meter. To check the compressor, disconnect the start relay to the compressor, then check it from all three pins individually to a ground.
