Nathan Chesebro – Little Ways to Make Your Home More Environmentally Friendly

Nathan Chesebro is a custom building contractor, and the head of Chesebro Construction, based in Bristol, Maine. One of his biggest concerns and goals as a builder is to ensure that the structures he creates are energy efficient, and that the process that he uses is not wasteful or harmful to the environment. This has become a big concern for many people in the past several years, with public awareness about climate change increasing dramatically. If this is a concern for you, there are many ways you can make your home more environmentally friendly. Unplug your TV when you are not using it. Many people just leave their TVs plugged in constantly, but only use them once a day or less. You can save a huge amount of energy just by remembering to unplug right after your favorite show is over. If you are building a new home, opt for bamboo flooring instead of wood. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Traditional wood takes much longer to grow back, so the supply of it is much more limited than bamboo. You can achieve a similar hardwood floor look with bamboo that you can with traditional wood. Use compact fluorescent lightbulbs where ever you can in your home. Just replacing one traditional lightbulb with a fluorescent one will save 400 pounds in greenhouse gas emissions per year. When shopping for new appliances, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and laundry washers and dryers, look for the Energy Star seal on the label. These appliances use much less energy than products that do not have this rating. Although it can be tempting to run loads of dishes or laundry that are only half full in a pinch, try to run full loads as often as possible. This can save gallons of water over time, and creates a more efficient system for you as well. When purchasing new furniture and décor items for your home, opt for used or recycled pieces whenever you can. This prevents waste and saves the energy needed to produce new items as well. When showering or using faucets, it is also important to turn the water off when you aren’t using it. Nathan Chesebro is passionate about creating environmentally friendly and efficient homes for his clients.
