In 1891 in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, two young women stand at a crossroads. Both are protégées of the same mentor, Copper Brown, yet they couldn’t be more different. MADD THIS SATURDAY Oct. 1: The New Baltimore Recreation Center will be inundated with activity from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Make A Difference Day is free. Bring the youngsters for a day for fun and free immunizations including flu shots at no cost to the family. Adults may have blood pressure and diabetes checks, vision screening and flu and pneumonia immunizations free with a Medicare Card for senior citizens, or pay a fee. VA hospital collections include pop tabs, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream, socks for men, paperback novels, pens, writing paper and envelopes, movies and playing cards. Financial donations are most welcome to help to defray costs. Sponsors are the New Baltimore Lions Club, city of New Baltimore and the Macomb County Health Department. Volunteer chairpersons Patricia Goldenbogen, Florence Hayman, Marcia Shinska and Karen Winter work diligently to make it all happen and Our Town sends gratitude. ECCO BOOK SIGNING Oct. 1: Susan Anderson, of St. Clair, has written "The Miracle of the Shared Lily Pad" and will share her special gifts with guests at the bookstore, 51117 Washington, from 12:30-3:00 p. m. Freddy the Frog learns to share what God has given him with... A major portion of the book will go toward research for Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia, (ACD), a disease to which the author has lost two grandbabies. Lily pads within the story have the names and birth year of babies from all over the world who were lost to ACD. The writer has the book and knows that youngsters who hear the story will love it too. LOGIA SATURDAY, Oct. 1: Held at VOX Church, 26950 23 Mile, Chesterfield, Love of God in Action will be distributing food, serving lunch and hot brewed coffee, from 10 a. m. until noon. Free haircuts offered by calling (586) 201-6543. The pantry is open every Thursday at the church, from 10 a. m. until 1 p. m. , with a light lunch served along with great conversation. Donations to the program are welcome at Donna's Creative Images, corner of Alfred and Washington and First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred, corner of Base, with a box available at VOX Church. Needs at the present time are jelly, pancake syrup, canned pasta, canned fruit, tuna, baked beans and vegetables. Also, winter jackets for men, women and children. New or gently used coats that are washable with working zippers. Coats may be dropped off at the church lobby or call for pick up at the above number. Coordinator Karen Winter is most appreciative of donations both of items and financial contributions. Our Town salutes Karen and her staff of volunteers who always there for those in need.
