Vacuum Cleaner Guide

The Vacuum Cleaner

Building cleaning has been an innate human activity for centuries, but only since the early 19th century have mechanical devices replaced the physical hard labor (performed mostly by women). Unfeeling carpet sweepers were replaced by manual suction cleaners, which in turn were replaced by electric vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century. Innovative inventors, who sequentially improved vacuum cleaners as intensity became commonly available, made these advances possible. Many early manufacturers failed, but some, such as Bissell, Hoover, Eureka, and others, became household words, as they competed for universal dominance with improved features, performance, and appearance. This book describes the fascinating people who made this possible, as well as the mercantile, cultural, and...

Win out over Vacuums of 2016 - ConsumerReports.org

It’s all right to say that with all the political news, 2016 probably won’t be a year most remembered for the debut of innovative vacuum cleaners. Still, vacuum manufacturers worked overtime to undulate out new models, with ever-improving robotic options continuing to sweep their way into a crowded marketplace. Here, the best vacuums of 2016. Drum conveyed—er, brush roll, please. This midpriced model earned top marks on bare floors and was exceptionally powerful when used with its attachments, which categorize a crevice tool, bristle brush, and power roller. On bare floors it captured almost every particle it picked up, keeping them contained its obtainable bag. It was no slouch at removing embedded dirt from carpet or tackling pet hair, either, though it was a little louder and tougher to handle than some other models of this font. It’s not the cheapest model you’ll find, but this straightforward, solid performer was certainly among the best vacuums we tested this year. It’s stimulating enough when a vacuum aces the bare-floor, tool-airflow, emissions, and pet-hair tests in our labs. The Hoover WindTunnel was also a solid player on carpet and handled easily. It was noisier than some other uprights but still impressive, with performance that beat out models costing hundreds more. Our top-performing canister vacuum, the Miele earned professional marks in almost every test we threw its way. It’s a champ at bare floors and embedded pet hair but also excels at capturing dust particles. Impressive airflow makes its attachments work especially well. It, too, is a champ at cleaning bare floors. It's also a strong performer on carpet, pet whisker, and capturing dust particles. Its powerful suction pairs well with ancillary attachments such as the crevice tool and bristle branches, as well as the powered brush roll. It’s a little clunky to maneuver, but at 23 pounds it's no heavier than most of the canister models we exam. On the surface, it might seem difficult to justify the purchase of a stick vac that costs two or three times what you could spend on a top-rated full-sized vacuum. Though no persist vacuum can fully replace the performance of an upright or canister, it’s what the Dyson V8 can do that makes it a standout. It offers exceptionally powerful suction, which helped it receive perfect scores on bare floors, carpets, pet hair, and edges in our test. It’s also among the quietest of comparable models and runs an stimulating 21 minutes on a single charge—long enough that you might be surprised at how infrequently you’ll need to lug around a heavier, full-sized paragon. This cordless sweeper easily sucked up dirt and debris from carpets and bare floors, and even devoured embedded pet hair in our test, compacting the unexcited debris into little clusters of dirt stashed in the head of the unit. While it lacks the suction of a full-sized upright or canister, it’s still a jumbo improvement over the cordless sweepers of yesteryear. Its edge cleaning is solid but still lags behind some other stick vacuums because it lacks a split tool. Despite that, we’re willing to bet it’ll become your go-to for small spills and everyday messes—and with a 47-minute run time, it’s the perfect way to hold floors tidy between deep cleanings. After a decade or so of domination by Roomba, Samsung’s Powerbot eked out a win in the battle of the best robotics, a grade that has seen an onslaught of noteworthy new entrants, including models from Dyson and Miele. The Powerbot powered through dirt on carpets and out-and-out floors, and even found its way into tight corners, thanks in part to its rectangular design. Even at $1,000, no robotic vacuum can replace a full-sized ethical or canister, but the Powerbot comes closer than any other and looks good doing it. . The Shark does everything a great hand vacuum should do—in an inexpensive and calm-to-use package. It excels at sweeping small messes from bare floors and easily gets into corners. It runs for a full 19 minutes—longer than you’d deprivation for most small messes—and even comes with a rotating brush roll that helps it tackle pet hair and even spot clean carpets.
